Multi-Option Screen & Roll Offense

with Saul Phillips,
North Dakota State University Head Coach;
2009 Summit League Coach of the Year

Learn how Saul Phillips led his team to the NCAA Men's Tournament in their first year of eligibility! Coach Phillips explains how instrumental the screen & roll has been to the early success of his program while competing against the bigger NCAA Division I basketball teams.

Coach Phillips' system is tremendous for battling teams that pressure passing lanes and have bigger, more talented players. He begins with a 2-on-2 set-up, covering three types of ball-screens:

  • Vertical: Basic flat screen above the three-point line with "Phoenix Action."
  • Standard: With the screener facing a sideline, Phillips teaches you how to read the hedge man and the options available.
  • Chip: Screen in transition where the screener sets and pops.

With these three ball-screen options, Phillips demonstrates how to "pink" and "plus" the screen to counter defensive pressure and weakside help. He also demonstrates options whereby the screen posts after rolling or creating a mismatch by screening away for a shooter.

Phillips goes into a 5-on-0 setting to demonstrate the three sets used in his screen and roll offense: Gold, Open, and Vertical. Phillips' stresses the importance of putting your players in the best possible positions to make smart decisions. He covers a variety of defensive pressure scenarios including hard hedges, traps, and switches and what you can do to neutralize the defense.

This DVD is a must for any team, at any level, that is looking create mismatches on the offensive end of the floor.
